Sensitive Words was a 24 hour silent vigil in remembrance of the students of the June 4th 1989 protests in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. Sensitive Words took place all day online on the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre between the hours of 12am and 11.59pm Beijing time (GMT +8) on June 4th, 2019.
The words written were in Simplified Chinese with an English translation and are the words that are known to be censored by the internet filters of the Chinese Communist Party in the lead up to the 30th anniversary. If a Chinese citizen searches for any of these terms on Sina Weibo or uses these words on Wechat the words will not appear or they will be sent to alternative landing pages.
'Remembering the deaths of 4 June 1989 is no neutral task. It is a civic duty, a burden and an act of resistance in countering a state-level lie that risks spreading far beyond China’s borders.'
