The Fire Within

The Fire Within is a project that took at its heart the role of citizens within their society. The key questions it asked were how much do we take part in what is happening? and how much do we try to make change when something has gone wrong?

3 audience members take a set of headphones and a mobile device and walk out into a central city site, they are then invited to listen to a scenario that implicated them in a protest movement. The work incorporates sounds, visuals and concepts from the Hong Kong protests, taken from a two week research trip to the city in November 2019.

The Fire Within uses the tools and tactics that the Hong Kong protestors use - online tools such as instant messaging group Telegram, decisions made by group consensus in a leaderless movement and using the movement's key organising principle 'be water'.
